Visit to Nairobi National Park: A Day Tour

12/10/2021

Whether you're in Nairobi for business or leisure and only have a few hours to spare, you can go on a wildlife safari and return home with some really fantastic experiences.

If you're a tourist wishing to see different parts of Kenya, a Nairobi National Park Day trip provides a brief introduction to the world of wildlife, offering you a glimpse of what to expect from the country's national parks.

Nairobi National Park

The Nairobi National Park covers 117 square kilometers, a tiny amount compared to other Kenyan national parks such as the Masai Mara and Tsavo.

It has a grassland savanna as its major environment. Nairobi National Park is large, rich with wildlife of all kinds, and nearby to the city for skyscrapers to serve as a stunning backdrop, creating a striking contrast.

The Park is home to four of the Big Five, including lions, rhinos, buffaloes, and leopards, as well as over a hundred other animal species. The Nairobi National Park boasts approximately 400 migratory and indigenous bird species. So, bird lovers will be more than pleased.

The park's climate is comparable to that of the rest of the country:

  • Dry and hot from January to March,
  • Hot and wet weather from April to June, and
  • Warm and moist weather from July to October.

It is open throughout the year. The National Park is also home to an animal orphanage and the Nairobi Safari Walk, both of which are notable day-tour destinations.

In the park, there are a few dams that serve as a supply of water during the summer months, attracting a large number of grazers to the banks.

The Athi River forms a natural barrier on the park's southern edge, with 'hippo pools' where tourists can take guided treks while looking for crocodiles and hippos in the pools.

Day Tour in Nairobi National Park

You can take a full or half-day tour of the National Park. A full-day tour begins early morning and usually includes a picnic lunch, whereas a half-day tour can begin early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The best time to view animals is early morning when they are most likely hiding from the sun.

It is also ideal to use a tour operator, as they will pay park fees on your behalf.  Your travel company will either employ a pop-up roof van or a safari car customized for animal sightings.

Stunning views and photo opportunities are available from any vehicle. Since the roads are accessible year-round, you can even use a smaller vehicle like a sedan, but it may not be the most pleasant way to see and photograph wildlife.

An early morning game safari can be chilly, especially if you're in a pop-up van or an open vehicle, so bring a jacket or sweatshirt with you. A large hat, bug repellant, goggles, binoculars, and, most importantly, your DSLR are all must-haves.
