Amazing Facts to Know About Elephants before Your African Family Safari Holiday

04/15/2022

Elephants are one of the most interesting species. They are intelligent, affectionate giants with incredible strength and are available in different sizes. Also, the minor size elephants are amazing and can walk silently. In some cases, you won't even notice they passed you.

Baby elephants are also referred to as calves. They weigh 250 pounds from the time of birth and can stand three feet tall. However, in the initial stages, they can't see properly but can recognize the known by touch, smell, and sound.

They generally stay close to their mothers in the initial period for a couple of months and drink mother's milk for two years or longer. Also, baby elephants can drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day! And continue to drink for 10 years. Another fact about baby elephants is that after four to five months of their birth, they begin eating plants like the other giants.

At first, baby elephants don't know what to do with the trunks. But, after 6 to 8 months, they start learning how to use trunks to eat and drink.

Another fact about elephants is the female ones generally stay with the herds, and male ones begin a solitary life after 12-14 years of age.

Elephant Species

As per the scientists, there exist two different species of elephants:

  • Asian elephants
  • African elephants

Asian Elephants are mostly found in the rain forests of Southwest Asia, India, and Nepal. They reside generally in the scrub and rain forests. However, African elephants are further classified into two distinct species - the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant.

African savanna elephants reside below the Sahara Desert in the African region. Whereas, African forest elephants are mostly found in the rain forests of Central and West Africa.

It is said that the ones that reside in the African forest tend to have smaller bodies and tusks compared to the ones found in African savanna elephants.

The Asian and African elephants also differ in head size as the Asian ones have smaller heads and a "double-dome" shape. Another point of difference is that African elephants have much larger ears as they need bigger fans to cool down their body temperature on the hot continent of Africa. Asian elephants, on the other hand, have smaller ears and that too rounded ones.
